Fill my Heart With Zippers

If it isn't obvious by now, we are fans of cold weather at TCE! But something you might not know about us, is that while we love a good layered top look, we are monster fans of bottoms! Shorts are sweet and all, but you can do so much with a great selection of jeans. Use them as a pop of color with some high boots, or take them all in with a showy flat, either way, we are digging the zipper look.

Our top three picks in store now:

1. A lovely leather. Nothing can go wrong with a good leather bottom. You can dress it up with a form fitting top, or down with your every day basic tee. We pride ourselves on finding natural looking faux leather so you get the class and save the cash!

2. Color Combination. We love color, and we don't think it should just be on your shirt! Pairing a muted top with a bright pop of bottoms is the most perfect way to stand out in the crowd.

3. Red Raider Red. Need we say more? Obviously we are stocked with the infamous red and black. Pair these with a Texas Tech top, or wear them out on the town. Either way you will look great, and show your school spirit.

Welcome Home Red Raiders!

This weekend the newest group of Texas Tech Red Raiders moved into their dorms! They stuffed 30 or so well packed plastic tubs into a room that can't even handle storing the 30 or so unpacked plastic tubs. They shuddered at the thought of their clothes fitting into the tiny excuse for a closet. And pulled out their bed on the first night to realize they would spend the next year sleeping face-to-face with a new roommate.

We have all been here, and we all came out saying the same thing: Freshmen year was the best year ever!

Here at T.C. Ellis we hold Texas Tech near to our hearts, and keep the girls of Tech there too! Seeing rush candidates come through, hurrying around for the perfect pref night outfit is something we look forward too every year. And stocking our store with red and black, helping our Tech girls look great decked in school spirit for that first kick off of the season puts a smile on our face.

And while all of this sounds amazing and fun, we understand how scary it can be to start this new time in your life. And that is why the TCE girls have compiled this list of tips for your Tech experience:

1) HAVE THE BEST FOUR YEARS
Or five, for those of you already preparing for that super senior status! These years go by so fast. You wake up one day holding a cap and gown wondering where the time went. Remember to take it all in, and take no experience for granted. Remember getting dressed up for a night out with your roommates, and remember that first boy you spotted across the room of a party. Understand that those lame group projects are friendships in the making, and lean on your classmates in the good and bad times. Beg your parents for that study abroad trip like you begged them for that pony as a child, and always spend your last few dollars on that Red Box movie night. These memories stay with you forever, make them worth recalling.

2) DREAM NO LITTLE DREAMS
This is something you will hear many, many times over the next few years, and it is something you shouldn't overlook. Texas Tech is made of people "dreaming no little dreams," and you are now one of them. The next four years will be filled with 8 am classes and making the near impossible run from any other building to the Spanish building. But you will also learn that Tech is full of the most amazing professors and staff. They want you to succeed and they will stop at nothing to see it happen. No matter your reason for coming to Tech, you will leave it all the same. This is the place we love, and a place that loves us right back.

3) WELCOME HOME
New Red Raiders, welcome home! No, we will never be the house you grew up in, we don't do your laundry or cook you great meals (though the Chick-Fil-A in the SUB rocks). But we are your home. This is the time you will grow and learn. The place you will look back on for all nighters and new friendships, for coffee dates and lasting loves. At your first big girl job you will spend time day dreaming of Broadway and lazy Sundays with your roommates. And that is the thing with Texas Tech, it will be here. You can always come back home.

We hope you all a safe and fantastic first year. We welcome you with open arms and can't wait to see what wonderful things are coming for you all! And on days when you need a little relief, or the perfect outfit for that special occasion, come to T.C. Ellis. We love to see your shining faces!

On TCE's Radio

Lorde. She is fresh and rocking the music scene. At least our music scene. We are obsessed with this girl.

Forget the song of the summer, her single Royals is the soundtrack to our entire lives. The creative mix of beats and lyrics flow effortlessly into a mix of music bliss. For a generation full of hipsters and dreamers her rhymes strike a chord with millions.

Lorde has found the perfect concoctions of words to describe the life most of us would die to live. We are poor and we are young. We act like we rule the world, but all we really rule is an empty pocket book and our happy hour drink.

Closing your eyes to the sound of her lyrics "We will never be royals, it don't run in our blood. That kind of lux just ain't for us, we crave a different kind of buzz," brings you to a place of complete content in being poor and emerging.

Make Your 4th a TCE Fest

Happy almost 4th everyone! We are stoked for the fun fest and a day of sun bathing. But, like every fashion friend, we are remembering the tips of the trade when it comes to summer holidays. Here are some thoughts we complied to make your 4th fabulous!

1) Always Dress The Part
Don't be the dud who isn't sporting their holiday colors! Sure, as you get older you might not feel it's okay to be the girl wearing head-to-toe red, white, and blue. We are here to tell you that just isn't true! Packing in the spirit makes holidays more fun, and just think of all the awesome combos you can wear!

2) Don't Forget Your Sunnies
There is no better accessory than sunnies, and in this blazing heat you are gonna need em! Not only will a great pair of oversized frames make your outfit complete, but it will save your retinas. Yes, we are being practical and fashionable here!

3) Be Safe
Obviously we want everyone to be safe. You boho babes are precious to us and we want you all to have a wonderful time. Just remember to think before you do, much like thinking before you buy.

4) Bring Flowers
When going to a party everyone will bring food, be the girl who brings flowers! At TCE we live by the rule of brightening up a room, this is the perfect solution. There is always leftovers at Bar-B-Ques anyways, so having one absent dish won't be noticed. Flowers on the other hand, will be mentioned all day long.

We hope you have an awesome 4th of July! Send us a picture of your fun or #TCEllis if you are sporting our boho gear!

What's With Zoe?

If you are going to talk about trending fashion in todays society you are most likely going to mention Rachel Zoe. She has taken her starter styling business and turned it into a power house all without scratching her Christian Louboutin's. With catch phrases like "Oh Me God," and "Maj" this momma of one, or perhaps a soon to be two (as tabloids say), has changed the face of fashion as we know it.

Though on this lovely Monday we highlight her for something a little closer to our level. RZ is known for her boho style. She packs her wardrobe full of flowing resort line maxis and, a TCE favorite, the jumpsuit!

We are inspired by Zoe's ever prominent black one pieces which leave much to the males imagination but nothing to ours. We know these outfits are perfect at any time, and adding a few to your wardrobe will set you up for fashion success.

So, thank you Rachel Zoe, for giving us notable verbiage, notable goals, and notable jumpsuits. None of which a true boho babe could live without.

What's On TCE's Radio

Here at T.C. Ellis we take our music very seriously. And sometimes there are songs we just can't get out of our head. Right now we are in love with Kopecky Family Band's new single "Heartbeat". This family of six is sweeping the indie music scene one hipster at a time, and we are completely on board.

The bands "About Us" page begins with a definition of Family and goes on to tell the story of their existence. There isn't anything more awesome than that.

Check out the song we can't get enough of here:

Who is TCE?

She is the one you see everywhere, but you never see her the same. She stands at the back of a room because even in the dark she shines. There is no need for her to draw attention to herself, the attention is in her smile. She has on the hat. Yes that big floppy brim, two simple feathers perched off to the side, slightly tilted over one eye. And the eye, it pierces in your direction.

You have seen her before, you remember her style, it is never repeated. Except for that dainty circle she wears around her neck on the dainty chain. It’s her trademark to accent the leopard bottoms, chiffon blouse, blue jean cut off jacket, or tasseled top. She is the girl who will rock combat boots even when everyone in this little town stares.

She has made friends over the years, she is known by the brand of a school, but soon she will know by something else. Her identity will be defined by what she does more than by who she is.

But who is she? To be said in three words, she is “Leather and Lace.” She has always been the girl full of beauty. Grunge beauty, and indy beauty, even a slight hint of preppy beauty that was left behind by that teenage girl so focused on fitting in. Though that is the beauty of it all. We are all these things she embodies.

We are all these people we once were and will become. But for her it came natural, she never forced it, just let those little pieces stick around. You can find her at the bar with one of those numbers so many girls wear. But don’t think that is all you will see. No, she will dawn the black dress with pumps and her red biker jacket. Her hair thick and long down her back. And her clutch. She carries a clutch because nothing is more important to bring than yourself.

No need for a phone, she doesn’t account for those not in the moment. Her hands don’t twitch to the letters of a text message, her mind reels with ideas of the future. She remembers being young and being different, even then.

The value of money always on her mind. How much allowance must I save to get that Marc Jacobs wallet? When can I run away to New York and live in a fabulous flat the size of my hand? Where will I put my shoes? And will I fit in? She has always been years ahead of her classmates. This point in her life is no different. She starves for fashion. Her parents monthly budget will be no better spent than on those aztec wedges. She fights for the designers she always loved.

In a town full of typical brands she strives to be the difference. Her mind reels with the idea of her future. This transition from college to adult life. Where will she be? What will she do? Her dreams of walking the streets from day to night. From skinnies and boots to fur and an afghan scarf. From a protected life to the unknown. She signs off saying always with love, because to her love is all she has ever needed.

It is the constant she has always felt. The love for her favorite pair of jeans. How they make her feel on the worst of days. When she is unsure of what is to come she runs for them, and for all the things she has put so much heart into collecting over the years. She can think the best. She can dress her best. But she will not know the outcome until it is here. All she has, and all she has ever had, is her style. And that will never change.

Always with love,

SXSW street style

Hi all! So most of your are on spring break, and most of you are not looking at your phones, or computers, or iPads, let alone reading this blog. But I am not. I am writing this unread blog instead! I'm also sitting in a coffee shop in Austin taking in a long day of SXSW.

For those of you who perhaps don't live in Austin (or checked out for spring break weeks ago and haven't turned on a computer since) SXSW stands for South By South West. And that translates to street style!

But let me back up for just a moment to explain what else it stands for. INVASION!! Yes, this town has exploded with people. Maneuvering the streets is like driving a broken down car. You literally don't move. It took me 20 minutes to inch my way two blocks over. If this is what New York is like I might consider a new future dream...

But being stuck in these mounds of traffic, and while dodging those pedi-cabs one thing caught my eye. Well, really it was a lot of things. There is so much style lurking on these streets. Just think about it. People from all over the world (literally I heard languages I never imagined today) are cultivating in one area and bringing all their personal style with them!

I have been seeing the best of all on the streets of down town Austin. The headbands and ripped shorts. The combat boots and band shirts. A mix between what I can only imagine was the style of Woodstock and the best boho shop in the world!

girls are in floppy hats and flowy dresses. They look like they don't care but have the best style ever thought of:

Even the men are getting in on the action. Skinny jeans and colors galore, all wrapped up with a ragged twist:

If one thing can stick around from this crazy week of overcrowded streets and over populated town I hope it is this style! If you have the chance to explore Austin right now please do! But don't move here. I've seen many sings saying they like the visitors but not to make yourself a permanent resident. It is a great time to witness this crazy style fusion. Just don't forget your personal preference... oh and your sunnies!

Back to the basics

Gap got it right with their invention of the basic tee. I'm sure they were not the first ones to ever throw together a simple cotton blend with basic colors and cut. But when The Gap first opened the only things you could find behind their window displays and opened doors were perfectly pressed jeans and the most basic of all items… the white tee.

Most people don't remember this phase, but as I was being so graciously helped one day in the check out line, the boisterous sales rep told me all about it. "You know," he shimmied at the well thought out news he was about to display on top of my stuffed to the brim bag. "This fabulous store almost didn't make it. The same thing that put them on the charts almost caused them to go under."

I was shocked to think… Gap, only sold tees and jeans?? Clearly this was before my time! But the more the thought lingered in my mind, the more it began to seem like a madly brilliant idea.

We search high and low for this basic item. We don't want to pay too much simply because it is worth so little. Do you want a pocket to put virtually nothing in? It does look cute! And V-neck or swoop? These are choice that can make or break an outfit, along with your life!

Yet it comes down to something as simple as the fabric it is made out of. At the end of a long and exhausting day what item do we grab for? And when the weekend rolls around what goes better with that vibrant scarf we just had to buy that is incredibly over priced? If there was no basic tee what would go under a blazer that also pairs perfectly with jeans? And yes, I mean those jeans. The ones you refuse to get rid of even though the dawn a huge crotch hole or tattered hem.

It you can find something else that matches all those scenarios I'd praise you, and give you your very own fashion line… if I actually have the power and means to do so. But a girl can applaud right?

So obviously, after listening to this rather long rant about the most amazing tee a girl can have, when T.C. Ellis got in our new line of basic tees we were ecstatic! I can see the fashion bloggers now "TCE to be the next Gap!"

...A girl can dream right?

Maybe we won't be the next big name to set trends that last decades long. But we can celebrate the thing that makes the world go round: The basics! So here is to the beautiful blues and whites which we can recognize from a mile away. And here is to this awesomely comfortable shirt all our own! Umm.. did I mention they are only $15.50?

Yeah, you are going to want to snag yours fast! www.shoptcellis.com

The thing that caught everyones eye

As much as I'd love to sit on here and babble about all the wonderful dresses and fabulous jewels that walked their starlets down the red carpet at this years Oscars, it would take away from the one thing that stole the entire show... Jennifer Lawrence. And I'm not even taking into consideration her award winning fall!

I will start as so many of those famous reporters do, and  talk about her dress. It can be summed up quite simply: To die for! That Dior Haute Couture dress could not have been any more stunning. Paired with Chopard jewels, a Roger Vivier clutch, and Brian Atwood shoes (Rachel Zoe knows EXACTLY what she is doing!)

But that wonderful white princess gown is something that captures what I so dearly love about Jennifer Lawrence. She wears these perfect outfits which would usually require such poise, and she doesn't take it. She is herself 100% of the time.

A night that is usually full of quiet remarks and subtle waves was rocked by "The Girl on Fire."

Nothing could have portrayed her better than that title. Though she is not Katness from The Hunger Games she is, in every other sense of the word, fire!

Someone who, in one night, can exclaim to Ryan Seacrest "They have food here!? I'm so hungry!" Accept an award after a tumble down the Oscar stairs with the comment "I wanted to say a very bad word that I couldn't... it starts with a F," is someone we can all look to.

Jennifer Lawrence has shown us that this profession we all gawk over is not about the pretty dresses and poised speeches. Sure, we love those too. But what these people (because yes, in the end they are just people) are trying to do is make art. They want to paint a picture that many of us don't have the ability to do. And this young lady is doing just that!

Surpassing all the glitz and glamour for the down to earth, will speak EVERYTHING that is on her mind, type of attitude. She is not over the top, she is not disrespectful, she is simply herself. Something we should all look too as our next seasons inspiration. Because no matter how many dresses you try on, or how many jewels are being worn on loan around

your pretty wrist, there is no better fashion statement than wearing yourself.

Always with love,

Summer colors are in full bloom

Every season brings new colors just like every year brings new trends. It is what keeps fashion going, and keeps buyers coming back for more. The world of wardrobe is full of new fabrics, chic looks, and designers taking a chance with cuts that could wow a crowd, or make them run for the nearest (safely stocked with basics) department store.

As we began to open boxes and pulling out bags upon bags of new merchandise a few weeks ago we noticed one very evident trend: Mint and Coral! Yes ladies and gents (mainly just ladies) these are the color of the season! We have light mint and dark mint, a salmon coral and an under the see coral reef. The rows and rows of colors packed our back racks as we steamed straight the various items.

The more I saw these two colors wafting through T.C. Ellis the more brilliant I deemed the designers who chose this new trend.

See, these are two colors I am known to stray from. For me blues always match too closely to jeans limiting its accessibility, and after years of living in a top to bottom pink room as a dazed and confused 12-year-old, anything close to the hue sparks imagery of me drowning in a sea of pillows, blankets, rugs, even a Limited Too butterfly chair.

It wasn't until these bright beauties were brought into my life that things changed. Like finding the man of your dreams, these colors changed the way I look at things. With a blue just light enough to contrast a dark wash denim, but bright enough to mute the white was, mint is no longer reserved for the little blue box. Though I wouldn't mind carrying one around with my new little blue shirt, and skirt, and dress, and jeans!

And for the coral. A pink so preciously mixed with orange and red that I can stomach its vibrant rays. This color is looking great paired with just about any and everything we can think of. We have tried denim, it blends just right! We did black and the pop was elating! Ombre is a winner along with the infamous white jean.

Yes, it is safe to say we are in love with these colors! And it's a good thing because T.C. Ellis has quite a few of them in stock. Some of our best yet were the ombre maxi dresses. A great way to walk down any beach front or compliment to a pool visit. Kudos to the fashion world for this latest trend! We will keep unwrapping the boxes full or mint and coral until y'all come up with yet another brilliant idea! And you should keep coming in to snag them up, or shop online with us at www.shoptcellis.com!

Always with love,

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Hello all! I would like to welcome you to the T.C. Ellis fashion blog! Here I will talk about all things fashion and fun. Some will be about T.C. Ellis, and some will not. The things discussed in this blog will be accounts of my opinions and my views as I frolic through this world of dresses and jewels, shoes and sunnies... and all things fashion!

We won't delve into the nitty gritty just yet, first I'd like to explain myself and my stance on fashion. From a very young age I felt it best to be dressed up. Whether it was stealing shirts from my sisters over stuffed closet, or saving my very first paycheck for that Coach make-up bag which I just "Had to have!" For me fashion was what made the world go round.

As I grew older it became clear that my views would never change.

Not only did fashion become more closely embedded into my life, but it became an indication of who I am. Some people have their hobbies: he is a sailor, she is a artist (I don't actually know anyone who is a sailor). I was simply the girl with a filled to the brim, and then some, closet and too many scarfs. Something my roommates always seemed to enjoy as their fickle fingers flipped through the color coordinated hangers for their last minute outfits.

It has been asked several times "Why do you have so many clothes?" And said by my mother time and time again "You don't need anything else. Ever!" But this has never stopped me from doing what I do best. Shopping!

If you have made it this far you are probably thinking to yourself, dear lord this girl needs to get a life! But I have one... you can see it in my shoe collection. See, I don't pride on fashion because I am a snob, or think I need the hot ticket item just to fit in. On the contrary. Fashion is my life line because it is a way to stand out.

I watched girls walk around in oversized tees and Nike shorts for three years. And while I too was one of those girls at times, it helped me see the importance of being your own self and expressing it in ways that others can notice. Sure you might be the weirdo who is wearing an actual outfit in situations when it is unheard of, but would you rather be remembered or just another person in the crowd?

Some will say dressing up is too time consuming and not worth it. I like to refer those people to a quote from the infamous Devil Wears Prada when Miranda Priestly so kindly explained, through the mention of a royal blue sweater, that more effort goes into trying not to show your style than doing so does.

But it isn't about having to dress to a "T" every day. No, I am by no means telling you to ditch your lazy duds! It is simply that taking pride in your appearance seems to be a way to take pride in your individual style. A spunky scarf or some bright flats screams "Look at me! I love myself and want to show it!"

So bottom line, love yourself and love your style. At the end of the day clothes won't hurt you, they won't leave you, or tell you they want better things. They are only there to show you how good you are!

Always with love,
